Father and son gave another top perfomance as they leapt around the stage and belted out stomping ska, vintage The Beat's Ranking Roger seems to be another ageless legend and it was only the presence of his 23-year-old son, Ranking Junior, who now fronts the band with It was skanktastic and the best performance of the day so far, which is "Really Saying Something"!Īmazingly there were still two bands to go! Neville lost his shirt within minutes but he was the only person sweating in the unseasonally windy conditions at Twinwood. With his band he performed some of his new work which still sounds like classic ska, but for this festival he put in more classic Specials' tracks than he would normally such as "Ghost Town", A Message to You Rudy", "Do Nothing", "Concrete Jungle", "Gangsters" and "Rat Race" and I was beginning to think that this must be what heaven is like, if God is a "Rude Boy"! Neville Staples, originally of The Specials and then Funboy Three, also rolled back the years with another energetic performance that included stage diving and non stop dancing. The amazing Pauline Black is still going strong and had a fantastic stage presence from the minute she walked on, holding the audience in the palm of her hand as they ran through the familar hits such as "On My Radio", "Missing Words" and "Three Minute Hero" mixed with newer tracks. It just shows that the fantastically danceable ska beat can be added to any song and it will sound better - who would have thought that "Sweet Child of Mine" and "Take Me Home Country Roads" could sound so good?!įor many, the moment that The Selecter took to the stage was when the day really started and they didn't disappoint. It was particularly special because these bands had never appeared on the same bill together, even in those 2-Tone days, and as the day went on, the dancing got even more frenzied and the nostalgia more vivid! With The Selecter, Neville Staple (from The Specials) The Beat and of course the inimitable Bad Manners on the bill I just couldn't help it. I always fancied myself as a "Rude Girl" (and many of my colleagues would say that now I have actually achieved that status!) so I dusted off my Harrington jacket and on Ska Saturday I haden't skanked so much since about 1982! ![]() This page has been archived and is no longer updated.īadfest You are in: Beds Herts and Bucks > Entertainment > Music > Badfest > Ska Saturday: Skanktastic!īadfest 2006's unique Saturday line-up sent fans to ska heaven!Īs I said in my Punk Friday report, I was only a punk for three weeks in the 80s!
